Aang Beanie

Aang Beanie

Patterns for Prayers

The past two blog posts have been a little different than My Pokemon Project and are very special projects. I received a message asking if I could crochet a couple of beanies for a 14 year old young man battling cancer. I really wanted to get started right away on these patterns instead of waiting until my entire Pokemon Project is complete. I hope you enjoy these two patterns. The first one was the Rasta Beanie and the second is this one, the Aang Beanie. Aang is a character from the American animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I really love how this beanie turned out! It is a fairly simple pattern and is a little different and unique.

Both patterns will also have a YouTube: How To on my channel Crochet By Katie Humes and will be easy enough to follow for new or beginner crocheters. Thank you for all the messages and support I have received for these projects and the Pokemon projects, it is hard not to get emotional thinking of what these projects bigger purpose is and I am filled with gratitude as I share these patterns with the world.

Yarn, I used Red Heart 4ply: Buff and Turqua
5.50mm Crochet Hook
Yarn Needle
Scissors

Abbreviations:

sl st - slip stitch
ch - chain
MR - magic ring
sc - single crochet
hdbl - half double crochet

The Beanie:

Begin with Buff Yarn and work in continuous round.

Round 1: Create a MR, ch3, 9dbl into the MR (10)
Round 2: 1dbl inc in every stitch around. (20)
Round 3: 1dbl, 1dbl inc, repeat that pattern all the way around (30)
Round 4: 2dbl, 1dbl inc, repeat that pattern all the way around (40)
Round 5: 3dbl, 1dbl inc, repeat that pattern all the way around (50)
Round 6: 4dbl, 1dbl inc, repeat that pattern all the way around (60)
Round 7: 5dbl, 1dbl inc, repeat that pattern all the way around (70)
Round 8-12: (5 rows) 1dbl in every stitch (70)
Round 13: 5dbl, 1dbl dec, repeat that pattern all the way around (60)
Round 14: sc in every stitch around (60)

Finish off the beanie with a sl st and weave in the tail.

The Arrow:

The arrow needed to be long enough to reach the back side of the beanie because all of the pictures I have looked up for Aang show that his arrow actually flows down his back from his head, so I decided to make the arrow as long as I possibly could on the beanie.

Round 1: ch 8 (8)
Round 2: hdbl into the 4th chain from the hook, hdbl to the end of the row (5)
Round 3-28: (26 rows) ch 2, turn, hdbl in every stitch (5)
Round 29: ch 4, turn your work, 8sc back across, ch 4 off the opposite side, turn your work, 3sc back to the main strip and sl st underneath the bridge you created to the main strip.
Round 30: working down the main strip, sc around the entire blue strip, adding 3sc stitches at each corner for a better shape, I ended with 78 stitches but it does not have to be exactly 78 just make sure your stitches look clean where you enter your hook (78)
Round 31: When you reach the top of your main strip you will begin making the triangle shape for the arrow. hdbl accross this row where we left the floating edges (12)
Round 32: ch 2, turn, 1hdbl dec, 8hdbl, 1hdbl dec (10)
Round 33: ch 2, turn, 1hdbl in every stitch (10)
Round 34: ch 2, turn, 1hdbl dec, 6 hdbl, 1hdbl dec (8)
Round 35: ch 2, turn, 1hdbl dec, 4 hdbl, 1hdbl dec (6)
Round 36: ch 2, turn, 1hdbl dec, 2 hdbl, 1hdbl dec (4)
Round 37: ch 2, turn, 2hdbl dec (2)
Round 38: ch 2, turn, 1hdbl dec; at this poing do not turn or clip yarn but instead hdbl around the entire boarder of the arrow inserting 3hdbl into each of the corner stitches to create clean edges; once you reach the very top of the arrow at the end sl st into the point and leave a long tail for sewing the arrow in place.

Pin the arrow to the beanie and sew into place.

Thank you so much for crocheting along with me today! I hope you like this pattern as much as I do. Have a wonderful day!!

Round 17) ch 2, dbl in every stitch around, sl st and finish off by weaving in your yarn tail (56)

For the braids:

Cut 120 strands of black yarn (or preferred hair color). Cut the strands to be approximately 32'' long or your own desired length. Separate the strands into 10 groups of 12 strands.

Flip the bottom portion of the beanie inside out while you work on attaching each group of strands. Grabbing one bunch at a time thread it in between Round 16 and Round 17 catching 1 or 2 stitches for support. Using your crochet hook pull the group of strands through. Once you have pulled the strands through be sure that each part of the 'hair' is at equal lengths. You can pull the strands one at a time to even out the lengths.

Separate each group into 3 sections of 8 strands in each section.

Braid the sections together and secure with a rubber hair tie.

Repeat this process until the entire back of the beanie has 10 braids. I spaced my braids 2 crochet stitches apart.

If desired using a metal bristled pet brush, brush out the ends of the hair and/or the entire braid to make it look more like dreadlocks.

I hope you enjoy this pattern!! The next pattern we will be working on is a beanie made to look like Aang from Avatar The Last Airbender!! Happy crocheting!! #patternsforprayers

Tips/Hints: If you are going to be using a different hair color than black for rounds 15 & 16 use the same color of yarn that you will be using for the braids. For example if you wanted brown or dark brown braids when switching to black at the end of round 14 you will switch to the brown or dark brown or preferred hair color and use it for round 15 & 16 so that when you thread your braids the yarn color matches and they are hidden.

Charmander

Charmander

Crochet By Katie Humes

My Pokemon Project

Materials Needed:

3.25mm crochet hook
Scissors
Yarn Needle
Embroidery Needle
Yarn I use Red Heart 4 ply : Pumpkin Orange, Lemon Yellow, Cream, Hot Red, Bright Yellow
Embroidery Thread: Black and White
Felt: Black, White, Blue, Pink
FABRI-TAC - Fabric Glue
Metal Bristled Pet Brush

Abbreviations:

MR - magic ring
sc - single crochet
inc - increase
dec - decrease
sl st- slip stitch
BLO - back loops only
FLO - front loops only

Head and Body

Begin with Pumpkin Orange Yarn.

Round 1: 6sc into MR (6)
Round 2: inc x 6 (12)
Round 3: (1sc, inc) x 6 (18)
Round 4-5: 2 rows - 18sc
Round 6: 6sc, 6 inc, 6sc (24)
Round 7: 24sc (24)
Round 8: 6sc, 12sc BLO, 6sc (24)
Round 9: 6sc, 3sc FLO, 2hdc FLO, 1dbl FLO, 2hdc FLO, 3sc FLO, 6sc (24)
Round 10: 6sc, 6dec BLO, 6sc (18)

Lightly stuff head.

Round 11: 18sc
Round 12: (2sc, inc) x 6 (24)
Round 13: (3sc, inc) x 6 (30)
Round 14-15: 2 rows - 30sc (30)
Round 16: (3sc, dec) x 6 (24)
Round 17: (2sc, dec) x 6 (18)

Stuff the body.

Round 18: (1sc, dec) x 6 (12) sl st

Clip yarn, using the yarn needle sew up the bottom of the Charmander through the front loops only creating a nice circle on the bottom of the body.

Don't clip yarn all the way off at this point. Instead weave it back up through the body to the mouth area. Using the yarn sculpting technique pull the mouth inward to create a smaller smile and a thin open mouth for the Charmander. Leave enough space for the pink felt tongue and a few teeth to be added with the embroidery thread.

Add the face details before moving on to the arms, legs, tail and body. Cut two half ovals out of the black felt for the eyes. Cut two smaller full circles out of the white felt for the tops of the eyes. Finally cut to blue crescent shapes; out of the blue felt, about the same size as the white circles for the bottoms of the eyes. Using FABRI-TAC glue the pieces together on top of the black felt. Let those pieces rest for a couple of minutes before gluing them directly to Charmander's face.

While the eyes are drying begin embroidering the other face details with the black embroidery thread and embroidery needle. I did two eyebrows and two nostrils before adding the mouth and eyes.

Cut a small pink felt insert for the mouth. Glue in place with the FABRI-TAC.

The eyes should be pretty dry at this point. Go ahead and add them next.

For the final face details you will need your white embroidery thread and embroidery needle. I add four teeth. Two on the bottom and two on the top. The bottom teeth are slightly smaller than the top teeth and closer to the center of his mouth. I add the teeth using the french knot technique. Insert your needle into the area you want a tooth, wrap the thread 3-5 times depending on the size you want then insert your needle back down near where the first stitch came out. Repeat that four times for your four teeth.

Arms (make 2):

Begin with the Pumpkin Orange Yarn.

Round 1: 6sc into the MR (6)
Round 2: BLO 6sc (6)
Round 3-5: 3 rows - 6sc sl st (6)

Leave a long tail, clip yarn. Make 4 fingers by sewing the yarn tail back through to the hand portion of Charmander's arm. Sewing back and forth going into the same stitches make 4 lumps on the end of the arm, slip your needle through the lumps to gather the yarn to a point. Pull tight and then thread the yarn back through the arm. Attach the arm to Charmander's side. Once you sew both arms onto Charmander pull the yarn tails to the back, tie them together then hide the tails and clip and hide your extra yarn.

Tail:

Begin with Pumpkin Orange Yarn.

Round 1: 4sc into MR (4)
Round 2: 4sc (4)
Round 3: 4sc (4)
Round 4: 1sc, 2 inc, 1sc (6)
Round 5: 6sc (6)
Round 6: 2sc, 2 inc, 2sc (8)
Round 7: 8sc
Round 8: 3sc, 2 inc, 3sc (10)
Round 9: 10sc, sl st, clip yarn, sew the tail to Charmander's body

Flame on the end of the tail:

Begin with Bright Yellow Yarn.

Round 1: 6sc into MR (6)
Round 2: inc x 6 (12)
Round 3: 2sc, switch to hot red 4sc, switch to bright yellow 2sc, switch to pumpkin orange 4sc, switch to bright yellow on last stitch (12)
Round 4: 5sc with bright yellow, switch to hot red 2sc, switch to bright yellow 4sc, switch to pumpkin orange 2sc, switch to bright yellow on last stitch (12)

Round 5: 3sc with bright yellow, 1 dec with bright yellow switching to red on the dec, 1 dec with red switching to bright yellow on the dec, 1sc with bright yellow, 1 dec with bright yellow switching to pumpkin orange on the dec, 1 dec with the pumpkin orange, 2 sc with the pumpkin orange switching to bright yellow on last stitch (8)

Round 6: 1 dec with bright yellow switching to hot red on the dec, 1 dec with hot red switching to pumpkin orange on the dec, 1 dec with pumpkin orange switching to bright yellow on the dec, 1 dec with bright yellow, sl st, clip yarn, hide yarn tails and clip all excluding the pumpkin orange tail for tying off.

To make the flame's look like flame's I use a metal bristle pet brush to gently brush out the yarn until it is nice and fluffy.

Using the remaining pumpkin orange tail sew the flame directly onto the end of the tail. Tie off, hide the yarn tails and clip yarn.

Belly

Begin with the Lemon Yellow Yarn.

Round 1: Foundation Chain of 12, turn
Round 2: 10sc, 3sc in last stitch to turn, 10 sc back up to the top of the foundation chain, sl st to the top of the foundation chain.

Round 3: 24sc all the way around
Round 4:
  2sc into the next stitch,
  2sc into the next stitch,
hdc into the next 3 stitches,
  2dbl into the next stitch,
hdc into the next 3 stitches,
  2sc into the next stitch,
  2sc into the next stitch,
  1sc into the next stitch,
  2sc into the next stitch,
  2sc into the next stitch,
hdc into the next 3 stitches,
  2dbl into the next stitch,
hdc into the next 3 stitches,
  2sc into the next stitch,
  2sc into the next stitch,
1sc into the next 3 stitches, ch 1 turn

Round 5-13: (2sc, ch 1) turn
On the last stitch of round 12 do not ch 1 or turn, go directly into slip single crocheting around the entire belly piece to give it a finished edging.

Single crochet all the way around the belly piece to clean up all of the edges. (Aprox. 51 stitches) Pin the belly onto Charmander and sew into place using the yarn needle. Hide your sewing stitches amongst each crochet stitch.

Legs (make 2):

Begin with the Pumpkin Orange Yarn.

Round 1: 6sc into the MR
Round 2: BLO 6sc
Round 3: 6sc
Round 4: 2sc, 3inc, 1sc
Round 5-6: 2 rows - 1sc, BLO 7sc, 1sc, sl st, clip yarn

Sew both legs to the Charmander then add the three toes with the cream colored yarn. Thread your needle with the cream colored yarn, insert it directly into the center of the foot. Come out where you want the first toe to be placed. Entering the same hole you initially made thread the yarn back through the bottom of the foot repeating that same step until all three toes are completed. Finish by tying off, hiding your yarn tails and clipping the ends.
