Puppy Pixie Hat & Scarf

Puppy Pixie Hat & Scarf

Crochet By Katie Humes

I hope you love this puppy set as much as I do!! Before we get started with all the fun I have a little disclaimer, I did not come up with the shape of this hat on my own, a customer tagged me in a picture on Facebook so I quickly took a screen shot of the picture of what she was wanting. Later I went back to the screen shot and to Facebook to look for the original post and the source of the hat and if there was already a pattern. I searched everywhere, to no avail I could not find the original, so I apologize in advance to the original creator of this hat. Here is a picture of that post:

As you can see my scarf design is quite a bit different, but my hat is pretty close to this image. But it took me 6 tries to perfect my own pattern so I feel confident that even though my inspiration was directly from this image, the pattern I created is my own.

My cute little helper Oreo is a Pomchi and the hat/scarf set I designed were for a pair of Chihuahua's, so this pattern will fit any of the toy breeds with that head shape and neck size. It can be easily modified to be longer or shorter to fit the needs of your furry companion. Without further adieu let's get to crocheting!!

Materials Needed:
*Medium Weight Yarn (I used Red Heart Yarn 4 Ply; Oreo is sporting the Dark Orchid set, and the Pink set pictured is Petal Pink. The Blue Yarn I used for this tutorial is Royal Blue.)
*4.25mm Crochet Hook
*Scissors
*Yarn Needle
*Pins

Notes and Stitches to know:
I wanted the scarf to look knitted so we will be using the knit stitch also known as waistcoat stitch; however, if you prefer to single or double crochet instead I think it would still look very cute and would not effect the sizing. For the hat we use single crochet stitches in the back loops only and work in multiples of 4. So if you need to adjust the size you can increase or decrease by 4 stitches through out the pattern. We always chain 1 and turn at the end of each row for that hat, and we always chain 2 and turn for the scarf. Those turning chains are important to keep the work even. And last note is that I use U.S. terms in this pattern.

Abbreviations:
ch - chain
sl st - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
hdc- half double crochet
flo - front loop only
blo - back loop only
dec - decrease (sc 2 together)

Scarf

Round 1: ch 66, ch 2 turn (68)
Round 2: In the 4th chain from the hook hdc in each 65 chains, ch 2 turn (65)
Round 3: hdc into the flo in each 65 stitches, ch 2 turn (65)
Round 4: hdc into the blo in each 65 stitches, ch 2 turn (65)
Round 5: hdc into the flo in each 65 stitches, ch 1 turn (65)
Round 6: sc into the blo in each 65 stitches, sl st and finish leaving a long tail for sewing scarf together

Fold your scarf into a loop the way it would naturally and comfortably fit around your dogs neck. Pin it together in the spot that works well for your pet. Sew along the stitches catching both sides of the scarf. Be sure to work with the crochet stitches so that your sewn stitches are hidden.

To finish the hat turn right sides together, slip stitch both sides together by inserting your hook into both panels; blo on both, slip stitch up the side. Using a slip stitch at the top finish off the hat. Cut yarn. Leave a long tail, this will be for sewing the top together and also for the tiny puff ball hanging off at the top.

Flip hat right side out. Sew top of the hat together to form a point. You can then leave the tail to attach tiny puff ball or finish off and cut the yarn if you do not want a tiny puff ball. But can I just say I LOVE the tiny puff ball!! It is definitely my favorite part of the hat!! You may find that your pet doesn't like the way it bounces around and to be more practical/purely functional it could totally be left off, but if your pet tolerates it.... how cute right??

Finish the edges by going around the entire hat with a single crochet stitch. Insert your yarn and hook on edging around the bottom of the hat, and in both ear notches. Around the bottom edging of the hat you can dec in every other stitch to make the brim a bit smaller if needed. Weave in ends.

Insert your hook on either side of the hat and attach your yarn. Chain stitch across the hat to form a neck strap. (I chained 15 for mine.) Attach chain at approximately the same stitch on the other side of the hat. Single crochet back across the neck strap. Slip stitch in the end, cut yarn and weave in the ends.

The Tiny Puff Ball

Alright so yes I admit this is by far my very favorite part of the hat. It was also strangely the most difficult part to figure out how to make it work.

Round 1: Cut 40, 9'' strings and 2, 12'' strings,

Round 2: Arrange the 9'' strings in a straight line, gather in the middle and tie one of the 12'' strings to form a bunch.

Round 3: Fold all of the strings in half where the 12'' string binds them all together.

Round 4: Form a ball by gathering an inch down from the fold. Tie the other 12'' string around this ball.

Round 5: Trim your strings to make an even fluffy shape at the bottom of your fluff ball, leave one string long for tying.

Round 6: Attach your little ball with strings onto the tail you left on top of your hat. Tie it securely with one of the long strings and then trim all of the strings to look fluffy and even.

Enjoy!! Thanks for crocheting along with me today!! If you make this hat I would love to see how yours turns out! Use the #puppypixiehat and #crochetbykatiehumes on Instagram and Facebook to show me your work!! Happy Crochet Day!! See ya soon!
