For the braids:

Cut 120 strands of black yarn (or preferred hair color). Cut the strands to be approximately 32'' long or your own desired length. Separate the strands into 10 groups of 12 strands.

Flip the bottom portion of the beanie inside out while you work on attaching each group of strands. Grabbing one bunch at a time thread it in between Round 16 and Round 17 catching 1 or 2 stitches for support. Using your crochet hook pull the group of strands through. Once you have pulled the strands through be sure that each part of the 'hair' is at equal lengths. You can pull the strands one at a time to even out the lengths.

Separate each group into 3 sections of 8 strands in each section.

Braid the sections together and secure with a rubber hair tie.

Repeat this process until the entire back of the beanie has 10 braids. I spaced my braids 2 crochet stitches apart.

If desired using a metal bristled pet brush, brush out the ends of the hair and/or the entire braid to make it look more like dreadlocks.

I hope you enjoy this pattern!! The next pattern we will be working on is a beanie made to look like Aang from Avatar The Last Airbender!! Happy crocheting!! #patternsforprayers

Tips/Hints: If you are going to be using a different hair color than black for rounds 15 & 16 use the same color of yarn that you will be using for the braids. For example if you wanted brown or dark brown braids when switching to black at the end of round 14 you will switch to the brown or dark brown or preferred hair color and use it for round 15 & 16 so that when you thread your braids the yarn color matches and they are hidden.
